The last few years, I've deserted Tom and flown out to the east coast for Labor Day. This year was no different. I flew out to Norfolk (post Hurricane Irene) and got to spend a couple of days with Devin and Sarah's family in Richmond, VA. Sarah, Eva and Sophie picked me up at the airport and we stopped at Firehouse Subs on the way back to Richmond.

It was so fun attending Eva's 3rd birthday party. My duty was to make pinkalicious frosting for the cupcakes.

Sarah had the house decorated so cute for the "Pink Paris" party.

All the little guests loved their purses, pink cupcakes, and fun games. Eva was quite the little hostess.

Even Sophie got to attend the birthday bash.

Eva helped me make some delicious
"chinger" cookies.

We drove down to Pinehurst, North Carolina after work on Thursday and took the yummy cookies to Auntie Sara and Uncle Jon's as a reward for being willing to baby sit Eva and Sophie while Devin, Sarah and I took off for our BYU Football Road trip!
We spent all day Friday driving through Tennessee. We stopped in Knoxville for a lemon cookie at Ham and Goody's (a bakery Devin and Sarah had stopped at two years ago and Sarah has been craving a lemon cookie ever since).

Unfortunately, they had sold out of lemon cookies so we had to settle on a almond tea cake but it was YUMMY and now I may just crave an almond tea cake for the next two years. We got caught in an 1 1/2 hour traffic jam in Nashville and we finally arrived in Memphis at 9:40 pm, just in time to go to Corky's for a pulled pork barbecue sandwich

(they stopped serving at 10). It was worth the drive.

We even saw some fellow BYU fans enjoying the Memphis barbecue.
We got up on Saturday and drove to downtown Memphis and checked out Beale street.

I had hoped to eat breakfast at the Waffle House and drive by Elvis's Graceland, but Devin did not want to miss out on any pre-game festivities down in Oxford, so we headed to Ole Miss.

The tailgating at Ole Miss is legendary (see Devin and Sarah's blogpost for more info). Tents and canopies are set up on every square inch of "the grove" in the middle of campus. In true "southern hospitality" style they hang chandeliers and have centerpieces and serve on their fine silver at their tailgate parties.

It was so fun walking around and checking out each table set up.

Most had big screen TV's and satellite dishes and of course, delicious southern food.

We eventually found the BYU tailgate party

where we enjoyed more pulled pork, baked beans, lemonade and homemade icecream.

There were over 5,000 BYU fans in attendance. It was awesome. I was taking notes, since next year, Tom and I will have to organize a tailgate party when BYU comes to BSU for a football game.

I was so amazed at the "southern hospitality". Many Ole Miss fans made it a point to welcome us to Oxford and ask if we were having a good time and to invite us to their tailgate parties.
The game was tense

and we were so excited when BYU pulled out a win!

Our whole section went crazy! The Ole Miss fans were great sports and many came up and congratulated us on the win as we walked back through campus to our car.
Devin and Sarah had hoped to visit friends in Jackson, MS on Sunday, but Earl (tropical storm Earl) changed our plans. The storm was dumping 3-5" of rain in Jackson, so we hit the road and headed east through Starkville, Mississippi (that is so fun to spell) home of Mississippi State.

Then on to Tuscaloosa, Alabama home of the Crimson Tide.

. At Alabama, they have statues of all their national championship winning coaches. Of course Devin had to have his picture taken with Bear Bryant.

After driving through Birmingham, AL and deciding that there weren't any good places to eat, we finally stopped in Atlanta, GA for dinner at the Varsity Drive-In.

There's nothing like a good chili-cheeseburger, onion rings and a chocolate milkshake ;) Look at those kids in the background, pretty funny...
We finally arrived back at Sara's house at 12:30 am after a very full day of driving. Sara and Jon survived the weekend with 4 kids, but seemed very glad to see us.
We had a delicious grilled cheese and tomato sandwich(thank you Kay)Labor Day lunch

and then Devin and Sarah drove back to Virginia. I got to spend the week with Sara and family.

We explored Pinehurst,

shopped, did crafts, made peach and raspberry jam

and played with the kids including a visit to Chick Fi-Way (said in a chant).

It was an awesome Road Trip and I can't wait til next year when I can do it again!

That was fun to get to see what you'd done on your road trip. You guys saw a ton...of sports places. Bo-ring! jk:) We loved you coming and you are welcome (next time bring Tom Tom along though) ANY TIME!
We had a fun trip, didn't we? There's nothing like being right in the Stadium when BYU pulls out a win like that. The Grove, Memphis BBQ, rain storms, almond tea cakes and Varsity chocolate shakes... We're glad that you could come along!
