We have had a very hot and dry month of August with lots of wildfires burning out of control in Idaho. Tom's favorite thing to do to beat the heat is to head to the hills for a camping trip. We were able to drive out of the smokey Boise valley and find a beautiful, peaceful camping spot up above Cascade, between Warm Lake and Yellow Pine at Poverty Flats Campground.
We arrived on Thursday afternoon, set up camp and had a romantic picnic on the banks of the Salmon river, then we took a hike!
You can see a little bit of smoke in the air, but it was much better than the air quality in Boise.
After our hike we went to the hotsprings where we had it all to ourselves.
On the way back to camp that night we saw a bear loping along the side of the road. We were truly in the backwoods of Idaho
We had our breakfast the next morning and went on another walk and waited for our friends the Hurst's to show up.
After the Hurst's arrived we took a drive into Yellow Pine and then drove on a crazy, mountain road that we were lucky to get off of alive. We thought this sign was very appropriate and quite funny, since there probably aren't many airport courtesy cars up in Yellow Pine.
We found an awesome swimming hole and spent the afternoon swimming in the river.
We had an awesome dutch oven dinner that night with barbecue ribs, dutch oven potatoes and corn on the cob.
Saturday morning, the smoke had moved into the valley so after fishing and more playing in the river, we headed back to Boise, but we had a very rejuvenating weekend.
"So much in life depends on our attitude. The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference. To do the best we can and then to choose to be happy about our circumstances, whatever they may be, can bring peace and contentment."—Thomas S. Monson

Joan,
You look hot. Who is that clown-boy with you in the Halloween swimming suit?
I was about to ask what was so romantic about the picnic, but then the tantalizing picture of you soaking in the hot spring came up and my question was suddenly answered. Va va voom!!
Oh what fun adventures! Way to run and now plan on a 1/2 marathon for next year too. Wahoo! Whitney is super gorgeous, btw. The scenery is absolutely beautiful there too.
That swimming hole is calling to me. Man, that looks fun. But, as you know, me and crazy mountain roads don't get along too well, so I'll probably never get to answer the swimming hole's call.
