"So much in life depends on our attitude. The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference. To do the best we can and then to choose to be happy about our circumstances, whatever they may be, can bring peace and contentment."—Thomas S. Monson

European Vacation (Berlin)

No this version of "European Vacation" does not star Chevy Chase and thankfully we didn't have any comedic exploits, but we did have a fantastic trip to Europe.  Our summer 2014 began with a BANG!
We started our trip off in Berlin so we could visit Elder and Sister Mickelsen and they were FANTASTIC hosts and tour guides.
They met us at the airport on Sunday morning and our adventures began with a bus ride to our hotel, a quick change and then off to church we went.  We got there just in time to catch the last half of Sacrament meeting and then Sunday school and Relief Society.
(I'm looking a little jet lagged in this picture)
After church, Patty made us a delicious German feast, and we were off on a grand tour of Berlin.
First stop, the Siegessäule or Victory Column. Tom, Whitney, Hal and I climbed up to the top and got some great views of Berlin.

We visited the Brandenburg Gate and then the Jewish Holocaust memorial

and then took the subway out to the largest existing chunk of the Berlin Wall. They were having a record setting heat wave in Berlin, so by the time we finished our Sunday tour with a delicious bowl of ice cream and fresh berries, we were ready to hit the sack.

Monday morning Patty prepared a delicious Frühstück and then we took the subway to Checkpoint Charlie,

Where we walked through a display
with pictures and a history of the Berlin Wall

We saw lots of Patty's "Bearlin" bears.

We picked up Patty and Hal's friend Susan and she took the River boat tour with us. She has lived in Berlin for 28 years and is a great tour guide.

We had a Doner for lunch (a Turkish kabob)
and then tried a Berliner Curry Wurst.
They were both delicious!

But nothing compared to the yummy gelato we had next!
 Look at these delicious creations

Susan's dogs also enjoyed the gelato!
After a short rest, we headed over to the church to help
Patty and Hal prepare for FHE.
They asked us to give the lesson, here's Tom teaching about UFO's.

It was so fun meeting all the YSA's. They were awesome and it was so nice to see how much they LOVE Elder and Sister Mickelsen.
Whitney sang and performed some jazz numbers.
She was a "hit".

We played a game and then had dinner.
Patty and Hal made a yummy pasta dish with chocolate cake for dessert.

They spoil those Young Single Adults!

Tuesday morning, Patty and I had a morning of "sister shopping".
Hal was a good sport and tagged along.
Tom and Whitney took their own tour on bikes and had a wonderful time.
They rode all over the Tiergarten and explored the city.

And we fell in love with "Ampelman", the little East German traffic light.

We met up and Tom and Whitney rented our car, picked up our luggage, and we met Patty and Hal on the outskirts of Berlin for lunch at a German restaurant with Wienerschnitzel "as big as your face".
It was actually bigger than the plate and the three of us
couldn't eat this hunk of meat.
It was delicious though.

After lunch, we said our good byes to Patty and Hal and headed
for Frieberg, Germany and the temple.
Schönen Dank Patty and Hal, we loved our time in Berlin.

That's WAY bigger than your face! You all look wonderful. How fun to get to spend time with Patty and Hal and see them in their German environment!
