"So much in life depends on our attitude. The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference. To do the best we can and then to choose to be happy about our circumstances, whatever they may be, can bring peace and contentment."—Thomas S. Monson

California Dreamin'

The week after we moved into our new home we flew to San Jose, CA
to spend some time with Taylor.
Taylor picked us up from the airport and we dropped him back off at work
and we took his car and went to a mall to shop and get a bite to eat.
When in California, you must eat chips and salsa.

We met he and Brittany after work and loaded up and headed for
Modesto where we stayed the night.
The next morning we got up bright and early and drove to Yosemite National Park.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise.
I had no idea how beautiful it would be.
We drove through the park,
hiked to a waterfall and
of course had a picnic

California had had a wet spring, so the waterfalls were raging.

Taylor pretending to be on the phone with
Teddy Roosevelt who established Yosemite as a National Park.

Gorgeous!

We had a very fine picnic

Raging river

We drove back to San Jose later that afternoon and the next day,
we got up early and drove down the coast to Big Sur.
It was a glorious day.

We of course had a picnic with a spectacular view,
unfortunately it was right next to the road.

We stopped at this beach in Carmel on our way back up the coast.
It is called Monastery Beach.
While we were there we noticed a raft with a couple of search and rescue
guys out in the ocean.
Pretty soon we noticed an ambulance on the beach and police officers.
A search plane kept flying over head and then a helicopter.
We figured someone had drowned, but we didn't know for sure until on Sunday,
I searched online and found that a father and son were on the beach and the son had been
pulled out to sea and the father went in to save him and drowned.
His body was found on Sunday morning.
The son was rescued and survived.
It was pretty surreal seeing it all unfold.
The locals call the beach Mortuary Beach because so many people have drowned there.
It has a wicked undertow and riptide.

That night we got donuts at this 24 hour donut place.
They were yummy.

We went to church with Taylor and Brittany and then they prepared us dinner.
It was delicious!
That evening we drove to Half Moon Bay and walked on the beach.
We wanted to see the sun set over the ocean.
What a beautiful place.

It was so worth the drive to see the beautiful sunset, but on the way back to San Jose, we got caught in a major traffic jam. It was a Sunday night and many people had been at the beach and were headed home. That is why I live in Idaho. California traffic is crazy!
On Monday we met Taylor and Brittany for lunch at a ramen noodle house
and then got to the airport and flew back to Boise.
It was such a fabulous trip with fabulous people.

What a great trip! I love all the beautiful photos of Yosemite and of course all the ocean views from the places you visited. You 4 all look great in all the photos! Brittany is a darling girl - she and Taylor make a cute couple! That is so sad about the father drowning trying to rescue his son - makes you appreciate the gospel plan and the knowledge we have of life after death. I love the picture of you and Tom on Half Moon Bay at sunset - it is awesome!

We loved Yosemite, too, when we visited Missy and Jedd in Fresno and took a day trip there. How fun to hang out with Taylor and Brittany and get to know her. And that would be shocking and sad to watch that tragedy unfold with that father and son. You got some beautiful pics, Joan!
