For Memorial weekend this year we decided to go to the cabin in Island Park and spend the weekend with Grandma and Grandpa and Whitney. It was Whitney's only opportunity to go to the cabin with Grandma and Grandpa since she is flying out to "nanny" in Richmond next week when school is out. We had a very relaxing trip.
We took a fun drive into Montana on Saturday afternoon. Do you remember that sign Taylor??
Of course we had to have a picnic, but because it was a little chilly, we ate in the car.
Whitney and I took a walk while Grandpa and Tom fished later in the afternoon. Speaking of fishing, the fish weren't wanting to play, so Tom and Charlie got skunked.
Look at Whitney's new "wheels". She bought her first car last week and it's a beauty!
I never tire of looking at this view!
There was a bald eagle nest in a tree across the river. It was so fun watching the eagle.
What a majestic bird, if you look really close you can see the eagle's white head in a tree across the river.
We went to church in Island Park on Sunday morning. There were over 1500 people there. They fill two buildings and all the classrooms, etc. It is like Stake Conference every Sunday during the summer. After church Lucille fixed us a delicious roast beef dinner,
we later took a walk in Harriman State park.

Who can name Idaho's state bird??? We saw so many Mountain blue birds.
My Mom would be so happy, they were her favorite bird (and mine too!)
We took another drive on Sunday evening.
This is the Buffalo River, second shortest river in the US.
We love going on rides with Grandpa Charlie. He has a story for everywhere
and he keeps us entertained.

Isn't she so cute?? Whitney was so helpful and fun to be with!
Believe it or not, I even played cards!
We had some yummy food of course. This is our "Orange Vanilla Monkey Bread" breakfast.
Monday morning, Tom and Charlie transplanted some Aspen trees in front of the cabin.
Charlie is almost 87 years old and still going strong!
Tom and I took the scenic drive home.
We drove through Mud Lake and Howe, Arco, Picabo, Carey and Fairfield.
What's that you may ask? It is a "conning tower" from a nuclear submarine. What is it doing in the middle of the Idaho dessert in Arco, Idaho?
Well, 40,000 Navy soldiers were trained on how to navigate a nuclear submarine
from the mid 1950's -1990 at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory outside Arco, so the Navy brought this conning tower back to honor the town of Arco.
Since it was Memorial Day the little Nuclear museum was open and some Naval veterans were manning the park. This cute little guy took us on a tour and was so excited to tell us all about the Nuclear research that has taken place in Arco.
Our next stop was Craters of the Moon National park where we of course had to have another picnic.
Tom rated it a 7.5. The weather was a little windy.
But the company was great!
And Tom got to eat some of Whitney's yummy Banana Cream pudding!
Our last stop was the Centennial Camas Prairie Marsh outside Fairfield.
The camas was just starting to bloom and it was beautiful.
If you ever buy a scenic Idaho calendar there is always a picture of this camas prairie.
We LOVE living in Idaho!

What a great trip! Who knew about Arco and the submarine training - interesting! I love your pictures of the bluebirds and camas and of course you, Tom, Whitney and Tom's parents! I'm glad you had some fun picnics to add to your list!!(Do you keep a list?)Whitney's car looks awesome!
What kind of car is that? What a fun weekend and informative post. I didn't know all that stuff. I'm sorry the fishies didn't want to play.. . probably too cold.
I have a feeling that you guys have been over practically every inch of nature in Idaho. That's commendable! So cool that Tom's folks are going so strong and that you can spend time with them.
To answer your question Kay, Whitney bought a Hyundai Sonata (perfect name for musical Whitney) and yes, you can definitely stay in our new turquoise bedroom! :)
Beautiful pictures! I'm so excited for our trip to the cabin. The kids are going to love it.
Great post Joan. Why don't we get out more often?????? Exactly how much work and paying taxes can one guy take????????????
