"So much in life depends on our attitude. The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference. To do the best we can and then to choose to be happy about our circumstances, whatever they may be, can bring peace and contentment."—Thomas S. Monson

Camping with Mormon Jack

It's been a while since the Mountain View Ward had a Ward Campout, but with Bishop Morris (aka Lonewolf) a campout was planned and Patricia Manwaring was put in charge. We headed up to Hot Springs campground, all arrived Friday evening and everyone was in charge of their own dinner Tom and I have gotten so good at planning gourmet picnics. We dined on Italian subs from a real NY Italian deli, and Tom picked up a pulled pork sandwich at a roadside BBQ on the way out of town. He is one happy camper! Everyone ate dinner and got their tents set up! Even this guy wanted in on the fun! We all brought cookies to share. We had an awesome Fireside program with Jed Manwaring as the MC. With Jed in charge, you know there will be a few surprises. We got a visit from Mormon Jack, an old miner who buried treasure in our very campground. T-Haws did a rap and we also had a visit from Smoky Bear and a Gorilla? After the Bishop gave a campfire message, some of the Primary children sang "I am a Child of God" and we all attempted going to bed. Good Morning Mountain View Ward! After the Flag ceremony and devotional, we had breakfast cooked by the Bishopric with lots of help from others. Some of the Relief Society took a hike led by Patricia, to the top of a mountain. There's our camp down below. We got back from our hike just in time for the treasure hunt. The Primary kids found the tree (doesn't that tree look like an "ent"?), Mormon Jack buried the treasure under, many years ago.;) They found the buried treasure box with candy for all! We did a service project and cleaned up the campground, then the party was over and everyone went their separate ways. On our way home,Tom and I stopped in Crouch at the Farmer's market and then in Horse Shoe Bend at a community fundraising picnic where we shared a pulled pork taco with jalapeno coleslaw. Delicious! It was a great Ward Campout, we can't wait for next year.

Mormon Jack sounds like a great guy to go camping with. I already know that the Lonewolf is. Dad looks so happy and relaxed in that last picture. Pork plus the outdoors plus his little woman must do that to him.

Everyone looks so happy in every picture- that must have been a very fun campout. All except that dang bugler. Muzzle the bugler. I wonder if Mormon Jack is related to a guy in our ward= Jack Mormon?

Seeing all of your fun pics, I can almost smell the pines- my favorite part of camping! Looks like a great unifying idea for your ward!

Would Mormon Jack come visit the Shenandoahs? We need someone to come and inspire the YM in our ward. If that doesn't work, we could always have the gorilla come and kidnap somebody. Maybe that'd put the fear of God in them...
