"So much in life depends on our attitude. The way we choose to see things and respond to others makes all the difference. To do the best we can and then to choose to be happy about our circumstances, whatever they may be, can bring peace and contentment."—Thomas S. Monson

American Idol 5

Okay, if I have to be the guest reviewer this week, I'm glad that at least it was "Frank Sinatra" week. I've had lots of experience listening to jazz music especially through Whitney. Of course I think she's the best when it comes to jazz vocals and piano, but unfortunately she chose to go to Russia and isn't in the competition :( So here goes my attempt at replacing my amazing sister as the American Idol reviewer for the week...
#5 Casey James - Blue Skies. I think he thought because it had blue in the title that made it bluesy or something. Not my favorite performance for him. He sounded like a goat bellowing. He looked awkward singing Sinatra and you could tell he was out of his league. He definitely does not have a "crooner's" voice and will probably be heading back home sooner than later.
#4 Aaron Kelly - Fly Me to the Moon (Whitney sings this one so well!!!). Aaron is a cute kid, but that is about it for me. I still haven't figured out how he is still in the competition. He has a nice voice, but would I ever buy his CD? Probably not... He looked very dapper but was not at all convincing as a "crooner". I don't know what Randy was talking about not hearing the country vibe in his interpretation. I definitely heard his country spin on the song, but he didn't do anything for me and as Simon often says, he sounded like he should be performing on a cruise ship.
#3 Chrystal Bowersox - The Summer Wind. I liked her performance. I think she has a great voice and can sing anything. This wasn't really her vibe either, but she convinced me that she can perform lots of different genres.
#2 Big Michael Lynche - "The Way You Look Tonight". Big Mike has a great voice and you can tell he loves to perform. Tonight's theme was up his alley and suited his style. I don't like the way he pronounces some of his lyrics and his personality is kind of annoying, but he did a good job with his performance.
#1 Lee DeWyze - That's Life. Lee was my favorite this week. I loved his swing and the way he phrased the song. His vocal tone really reminded me of Harry Connick Jr on some of his notes (he did look like a new and improved Harry Connick Jr). I love the gravelly tone quality to his voice. Would I buy his CD? Most likely yes.
My predictions for bottom two, Aaron and Casey with Casey headed home. I must say that I loved Harry Connick Jr. as the guest mentor. His piano skills are incredible and I can't wait to hear him perform tomorrow night.
Hurry home Kay :)

I agree exactly with your review. I thought Casey's was almost laughable. Okay, it WAS laughable. I hope Lee wins.

Joan, I'm 100% with you on your review! In comparison with the other three, Casey and Aaron just don't have the chops, as the judges say. I have really noticed Lee's personality coming out more and more, selling his songs. He and Harry (who I really like ever since I saw "Hope Floats" with Sandra Bullock) had a fun vibe.

Good job on your guest reviewing, Joan! I agree with you, although I do think that Aaron is clean cut and a good kid and I like his voice. I'm sad he went home. I love your blog background and header btw - so pretty.

Excellent review, Joan. I am SO sad to miss Sinatra night and Harry Connick, jr, but at least you gave me a feel for it. Sounds like Aaron went home??? Probably time.
